Meet Alexis: HR Manager and Music Lover

Project Nia wants to take a moment to celebrate teamwork and company culture! This month, we had the opportunity to sit down with Alexis Thomas, a Human Resources Manager on our team to talk about life, mentorship, and career goals. Alexis has been with the team since February 2nd, 2018 and has seen great growth and success in the past year.

Where are you from?

“I was born in Houston, Texas, but I was raised in Lafayette, Louisiana for most of my life.”

How would your parents have described you as a kid?

“My parents would say that I was outgoing. Very friendly and sociable, I would always leave an event with a new friend.”

Were you in any sports or extracurriculars?

“Yes! I was the Team Captain of my high school wrestling team, and I participated in Choir, Debate, and The Criminal Justice Association.”

How did that competitive environment help develop you?

“It gave me the drive to want to win. I always knew I only had to be just a small amount better to win.”

Did you have any idea you would end up in this field?

“No, I wanted to go to law school and become a criminal defense lawyer. Never would I have imagined that I would do sales.”

Where did you go to college?

“I attended the University of Texas San Antonio.”

What is one life experience that you feel has shaped you?

“Moving away from my family to a new city alone was a huge experience for me, and I learned a lot.”

What is something we might not know about you by just looking at you?

“I love singing! I like making music in my spare time.”

What were your first thoughts when starting with the company? What was something unique you noticed?

“I was nervous and tried to go with the flow, but soon broke out of my shell because everyone was so happy and willing to talk to you and help you learn and get better. I noticed how every really enjoyed working there and had such a passion and vision for their goals. I had never seen so much ambition at one time.”

How would you describe the culture at your company?

“In three words, inviting, competitive, and positive.”

What has been your best memory with the company?

“After our office was reaching to hit 200 sales for a while, we finally achieved it and the managers rented a party boat to celebrate. It felt so great to work towards something and achieve it with your team.”

What is something you’ve learned through your work you didn’t know before?

“Having a fixed mindset will hold you back. Once I started working on my mindset everything just became so much easier for me.”

How has this career changed you as a person?

“I’ve become more patience, prepared, and understanding.”

What are your goals with the company?

“I see myself having a pool of opportunities in the future. So, for now, my goals are just to promote out as many deals to help change as many people’s lives as I can, and let that open up future opportunities for me.”

Do you have any mentors inside/outside of work?

“Dezmund Herron, Franco Tavera, And Melissa Dehesa are my biggest mentors inside of the office. They are always there to answer one of my many questions. Outside of the office, it would be my mother and grandmother. They support me through all of the things I do in life.”

What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

“I like hanging out with my friends, making memories at fun events. I have a list of concerts I have to attend in my lifetime, so I’m often attending concerts.”

Alexis, thank you so much for all that you do for our team and thank you for sharing your experience with the world. We can’t wait to see all that you achieve this year!
